Gynecology Q & A

What is gynecology?

Gynecology is the medical practice that deals with women’s health and the diagnosis, treatment, and care pertaining to the female reproductive systems: the vagina, uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and breasts. Gynecology comes under the field of women’s health and caring for women from puberty through adulthood.

Many gynecologists are also obstetricians and are referred to as OB-GYNs. An obstetrician cares for women during pregnancy. An OB-GYN is trained in both obstetrics and gynecology and may also have extra specialties, such as high-risk obstetrics and gynecologic oncology — the field of medicine that focuses on cancers of the female reproductive system, including uterine, vaginal, cervical, vulvar, and ovarian cancer.

What is an endometrial ablation?

Endometrial ablation is a procedure to surgically ablate or destroy the lining of your uterus. The surgery is typically performed to help women alleviate pain from a heavy menstrual flow.

Your New Beginnings provider uses NovaSure® to perform endometrial ablation — a quick, five-minute procedure that doesn’t involve any incisions.

With NovaSure, a slender wand is gently inserted into your uterus through your vagina and cervix. The wand extends a triangular-shaped netted device that expands to fit the size of your uterus before delivering precisely measured radiofrequency energy for about 90 seconds. The net is then retracted into the wand and removed from your uterus.

The New Beginnings providers also use MyoSure® technology — a tissue removal procedure to remove polyps, fibroids or other intrauterine tissue without removing the uterus. MyoSure also involves the vaginal insertion of a slender wand that gently cuts away the unwanted tissue before removing it through suction. MyoSure preserves uterine function.

MyoSure and NovaSure procedures can be performed in-office in just one day.

What is a hysterectomy?

A hysterectomy is a surgery to remove the uterus. Usually, the entire uterus is removed. In most cases, the ovaries can be left in place and you don’t have to have hormone therapy after the hysterectomy.

A hysterectomy can be performed to treat:

  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Uterine prolapse
  • Heavy or unusual vaginal bleeding
  • Cancer of the cervix, ovary, endometrium, or uterus

The New Beginnings specialists provide the da Vinci same-day minimally invasive surgery — a robot-assisted surgery performed through a few small incisions.

Most of the time, the surgery is performed laparoscopically and involves less downtime, so you can return to your family and work sooner, usually within two weeks.
